Understanding Chronic health conditions
  • Chronic health conditions are conditions that are long term often lifelong and therefore may have psychological and physical effects on a child or young person.
  • At different times depending on the condition can cause anxiety, fatigue and pain. 
  • On occasions chronic conditions are controlled with medication therefore these may have side effects we need to be aware of. 
  • Chonic conditions can have various affects on development depending on the type of condition such as: affects on vision, processing abilities, understanding and perception and attention span. 
  • Regular meetings and support strategies will be communicated by the SENDco.

Muscular Dystrophy
This condition is part of an inherited genetic, which means it can be passed on by a parent. 
The condition affects the muscles in a child or young persons body, it often starts in one area of muscles and then spreads. 

This condition can significantly affect a child's life expectancy depending on the severity of the condition. 

MD can develop at different times of a child or persons life does not mean they will always show symptoms at birth.

Epilepsy 
Epilepsy is a neurological condition (affects central nervous system), it can usually be controlled with medication although in some children causes severe side affects. 
Epilepsy can cause seizures ranging from mild to severe, but with this in mind if epilepsy is controlled well you may not know someone has this diagnosis. 
The child or young person may appear worried or anxious during certain activities as they are worried about their seizures. 

If you work with / support a child or young person who has an epilepsy an EHCP will need to be in place to ensure their condition is managed well.

Severe allergies  
Severe allergies is an umbrella term used to describe a variety of allergies that may be apparent all year round or may be seasonal. For example: a nut allergy. 
Severe allergies can be very dangerous if they are not treated correctly, a young person will need to have certain medications around them at all times. 
Children and young people with severe allergies may show a variety of signs and symptoms, this can vary in accordance to the type of allergy.

Removing barriers to learning 
When supporting children with SEND it is important as a practitioner you are aware of how to overcome barriers that can act as a challenge. 
  • Create an accessible and secure environment 
  • Promote value and respect 
  • Involve the individuals in planning their own learning 
  • Provide context and relevance to their learning 
  • Use enabling language 
  • Partnership working with parents & professionals 
  • Implement policies and procedures.
